INTRODUCTION

The use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) is expanding immensely each day. In turn, this is leading to the development of new technologies that interact with the GPS. The most popular of these technologies is GPS car navigation systems.

Over the past years, companies developing GPS car navigation systems have increased rapidly, with the first said to be created in 1995 by Magellan (Wikipedia, 2008). However, with the number of companies working on the development of GPS navigators, neither of them is completely ideal.

This thesis will aim to analyse how GPS navigators differ in terms of function, features, accuracy and so on. Which company has developed the most efficient GPS navigator to enable consumers to choose which one to purchase? In addition, what aspects of GPS based car navigation is disrupting this worldwide technology from performing at its best.

Recently, other navigation technologies have also emerged such as mobile phones equipped with GPS navigation, laptops connected with GPS receivers and navigational software and PDA based car navigation devices. These, in particular, smart phones, poise a major threat to the original GPS car navigators. In turn, it will be assessed as to how it will impact the market and which of these is most suitable for everyday use.

It is an obvious fact that without the creation of electronic maps and map databases, GPS navigators will not exist. Therefore, electronic maps within these navigators will also be analysed in terms of their source, how they vary, the accumulation of point of interests (POIs) and furthermore.
